ABRP continually crashes when connected to Android Auto. Unable to use ARBP real-time as a navigation tool through Android Auto. Keep getting error asking to Wait or Exit. Other navigation apps work fine.

We resolved all the issues we saw and also resolved an issue, where there could be locked map views when switching to other apps or screens rapidly. We just released 4.4.1 with those fixes, so make sure to update before your next drive. If you still see any crashes, it is probably another issue we did not see yet, so please open a new issue if you still see anything in 4.4.1.

Hi,
With 4.4.0 (2161), android auto didn‘t crash anymore. The problem seems to be resolved. Thanks a lot!

Version 4.4.0 (2170)

Please open a seperate issue for the SoC problem, if it still occurs in 4.4.1

Hi,

with (2161) it runs much more stable. But in my case there are still map loading errors or black screens left. On a 15 min trip the map crashes like 5 times. Maybe this is a certain problem with my MG4 luxury. This car has a 360° camera which is put on the screen every time you make a turn with your car or drive backwards. After doing the turn, the screen should switch back to AA. If ABRP is the mainly used app here, in my opinion there are some map laoding issues.

The other thing is, I cannot use ABRP when initially connected with the car. I can see the map on the car screen, but it is not possible to enter a destiniation. The red arrow doesn´t follow the route. I can fix this by opening ABRP on my connected smart phone.

ABRP not starting with phone off is a seperate known issue we are working on resolving in background. This is a longer running task. The problem is that since Android 12 on some phones the background app does not start automatically anymore due to system restrictions. There is a workaround though you can use. Go to app settings (long click ABRP icon on phone) scroll down to a settong called "overlay on other apps" or similiar and enable it. That allos whe app starting when phone is off too.

Hi,

we have fixed another issue we saw and pushed an update 4.4.0 (2161). Please check, if you still see any crashes, or if AA is stable again.

Dear ABRP, I have been using ABRP's navigation for over half a year. This period all without problems. Only since last week the connection to Android Auto falters while using the navigation. And often the connection drops completely. Is this a known issue?

I also got the same error with version 4.4.0 (2151).

Some context that may help: I was driving on the A36 in France between Mulhouse and Besancon and maybe this can provide some insight. Whenever approaching a city with many chargers, like Belfort or Bezancon, the Android Auto display started to freeze and the prompt asking if terminating the app or keep waiting started to appear. At first the map just froze, every now and then it kept reloading, but no success.

As others have pointed out, the app was still responsive and directions where still provided via audio navigation, and if the phone was unplugged from the car infotainment, navigation seemed as usual to me. My phone was burning hot BTW.

After leaving one major metropolitan area and starting driving along the countryside, the app was again smooth! (And since along the A36 there are not that many chargers...) no problems until the next city was reached.

While I was driving in Germany it was just crashing all the time... And one more thing, while driving in the city, the AA-display was super slow but it was able to update every some seconds or so, it was definitely worse when driving on the motorway. My suspicion is maybe it has something to do while the app is loading multiple chargers to show on screen? And since while driving faster on the motorway, the map is zoomed-out, more chargers can be loaded. I tried to disable 'show detailed chargers' and I think it helped a bit, but cannot say for sure.

Rolling back to 4.3.9 (2121) fixed the issue for me.

You should update your app, 4.4.0-2151 wasnt the latest, theres been fixes in 2159 and 2160. 2160 fixed it for me

Thanks, I just saw it updated automatically today. I will test it in a few days and also update with my feedback!

Still the same problems with version (2160). In my opinion it is even worse. In addition to the android connection problems there is a stronger appearance of "can´t load the map"-errors. Did send several bug reports.

I am suffering from same problems. Not usable. I will try to get a bug report next time.

Same issues with ABRP in combination with Android Auto when using the navigation mode. I am using the latest ABRP-version (4.4.0) and have a Premium account.

Watch out there is sub-versions too. 4.4.0 can be over 3 different app versions! In the settings theres a 4 digit number behind it. They apply without a playstore update!

Avatar

Could you please provide more details, when this happened? Immediately after app start, or after around 30mins driving only for example?

For me its usually after 10 minutes the first time and then its instant / 1-2 minutes after I stop to close and reopen ABRP on both the phone and AA.
The flickering looks like the "camera" gets stuck on a random point near me and after that it alternates every frame between viewing that point and rendering the intended view making a flickering mess. This happens even in old versions, but very rarely so without any pattern, that also fixes itself with a quick app switch in AA.
Not so after 4.4.0, there the flickering was nearly constant, one half of the frame being from the view when the app opened, the other half being the correct view before the app just gives up after 10 minutes like mentioned above, I would love to send a bug report, but the app is gone the moment I try and interact with the phone app when AA is running. ABRP is my main nav app I would love to get you detailed reports to fix this, but I dont know how.

Some more info: My phone is a Z Flip 3 running the latest OneUI 5.1 / Android 13 with AA Coolwalk displaying on my Peugeot e208 over an AAWireless dongle.
Alternative nav apps like Waze, Maps and Sygic work flawlessly, so do all other apps I currently have installed.

Edit: More exact way the first crash usually happens: ABRP is "responsive" on the car display, the navigation cards are lowering distance, the voice is working, but the map view suddenly doesnt update anymore and after a while the UI goes away and the left corner shows a button that says refresh or update or something like that. Then 30 seconds later it come back to life with the view flickering for a bit and then takes AA down with a crash.

The issue with the map you described is fixed with 4.4.0 (2160) and should be applied automatically on app restart (maybe do it 2-3x). There was a performance issue that caused the map to lock up. I saw a crash due to this myself, but not sure if it solves everything, we will look a bit further, but please try it with the mentioned version already and let me know if it improves the situation. We are also looking into the flickering issue.

Nice, I have a few long drives coming up tomorrow I can do without nav, I'll use those to test. I hope I may be able to get to the bug report button now and send you one when its flickering, in case that still happens. Also because I gotta pull over anyways, would a video of the flicker help or not really?

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

The bug report does not help with flickering issue, as it is not part of the reported data. We need to find a way to reproduce this locally and then we can look into it. I saw it myself too, so should definitely be reproducible. But if you find a way to reproduce this easily let me know. Or if you observe it in specific scenarios.

Avatar

It seemed to be made worse by coolwalks split-screen for me. The flickering sometimes only started when I went split-screen with ABRP already navigating a route and having to do the resize animation thing for the split. That would then cause the screen to flicker between the left side of the fullscreen map view and the correct smaller view.
Further, going out of splitscreen very rarely did fix the flickering, so did other actions that move the "camera", opening favourites menu etc

Watch out tho, this might be statistically wrong, because I drive with split-screen 90% of the time, so its almost a constant in my case

I just had a look again at one of the videos where flickering was reported, and it actually looks like it is the same map instance, but it is rapidly toggling 3D and north mode. If you see it again, please check if that is the case for you too, or if it shows two totally different locations. If it's safe or your passenger (if there is one) could take a video please do so, then you can check later in slow motion, if it is the same location. This would help us to confirm if it is related to toggling map modes or if there really is a stuck map instance from earlier as you assumed.

Then thats a different kind of flicker, just took slowmo video and it is absolutely two completely different places fighting for dominance, one is the navigation and one is a static shot of where the navigation started. How would I send you the video?

Samuel_ABRP

You can upload to YouTube as not listed and send me the link to samuel@iternio.com

Sent you the video, would love to know if it really is a different kind of flicker to the one you saw.

Hi, we just saw a crash reported from your account and fixed it. When you restart the ABRP app it should show 4.4.0 (2159) when it applied the fix. Please try it again with that version.

Still got the same problem even after updating, ABRP is unstable to a point that it takes Android Auto with it completely and when I stop to look at my phone its just stuck at the ABRP logo and doesnt do anything until I restart the app.

And when it decides to not immediately crash ABRP is flickering like crazy so that you cant make out anything on the map, I cant even reach the bug report button in the menu without it quitting. Forced a downgrade to 4.3.9 with ADB and despite the flickering at random intervals I sometimes had before already its fine
