Chevy Bolt 2017 with 66 kWh battery upgrade; OBDLink CX; ABRP app version 4.2.8; iPhone 12 Pro, IOS 15.5

Step 3 goes wrong.
Loading car configuration success
"BLE connection established, filed to connect to your car"

I've tried this several times, changing the order of doing these things: starting the app, plugging in the dongle, connecting Bluetooth in settings (or not). But nothing I've tried seems to work.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for taking so long. I think i spotted something in our OBD command list, that could cause issues on some cars or OBD dongles. We used an auto protocol select command, that seems to be quite slow on some devices and runs into a timeout. So i now manually select the right protocol for the Bolt, as we do that for other cars too. This was a legacy leftover from where we took over the OBD commands.

So in case anyone still has problems and can't connect please try it again. The new OBD commands are available and will be downloaded automatically when the phone has an active connection on OBD connect attempt.

If you use an OBDLink CX please pair it first in the OBDLink CX app (if you did not already) and then disconnect (make sure you are on the latest firmware before). This extra step will not be necessary anymore with 4.2.11.

Please provide feedback. Thanks!

It worked!

It took a few minutes for SoC info to show up in the mapping part of abrp but it did eventually show up.

It works now! Thank you very much!

I just got the OBDLink CX that is supposed to work with ABRP but I get to the last part to connect to car and keep getting connection not established. I have the lasted app updated on my iPhone but still not working. I tried connecting several times.

Hi, I have a 2019 Bolt and I'm trying to set up ABRP ODB connection using a OBDLink CX. It is failing on the 3rd step, car connection status with a 'BLE connection established, failed to connect with your car'. I'm not sure what I should try next.

I have a 2022 Bolt EUV, and an OBDlink CX. The third step in directly connecting to the car is not working. I’ve attached screenshots.

I linked the OBDLinkCX in the OBDLink app and that works fine. But now ABRP scans and says “No OBD devices found…”. Scans repeatedly but nothing is ever found.

IPhone 12 mini running iOS 15.6.1 using an OBDLinkCX on ABRP 4.2.10 (1052). Purchased the dongle this week for this purpose. Thanks!

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Hi, thanks or the Info. You need to pair the Obdlink CX in the Obdlink app first, there is something we miss for pairing with that dongle, which will be available in one of the upcoming versions, until then you need to pair via Obdlink app. After that you can completely close and not use Obdlink app if you do not need it.

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Hi, which phone, app version and obd dongle do you use?

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Hi, i think Torque uses the normal BT connection and not BLE. Could you please try pairing with the obdlink app via BLE first and then try it again? Make sure no other app is using or trying to connect to the dongle in the meantime.

Just checked the logs, the car does not return any data. Could be due to a simultanious connection to another app. Or if the car is not switched on. Can you please show the PID list you use for torque pro so we can compare it to our own list?

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Please pair the dongle with the obdlink app first and then after that close it again, disconnect (but don't unpair) and try again in ABRP. We are working on a fix for this.

Tried numerous times, both in “accessory mode” and in “ready mode”. Tried before driving, after driving 2 miles, after unplugging and replugging the dongle, after running and disconnecting OBDLink app, or not. Nothing has worked.
Reading on your forum I see other folks were having the same or similar problem back in February. I’ve tried everything they suggested to no avail.
I communicated also with app.support@obdlink.com, who wrotr back:
Hi Galen,

If the developers require any information from us, we would be more than happy to help provide this.
Additionally, if they do believe that the issue is with the CX unit, I would also be happy to send out a new CX unit to test with to help narrow this down. I just wanted you to keep this in mind.
Warm regards,

In this last report it looks like the connection to the dongle is established correctly, but the car does not respond. So i guess it is not related to the dongle.

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

As the connection seems to work now but the car does not respond there is not much we can do about this. Did you try other apps if they work?

Could of course also be, that the battery upgraded versions now need different OBD pids. But i think we already have some other users with upgrade and we did not get many complaints about a chevy bolt yet.

Just to make sure it's not related to the dongle - do you have another dongle or know someone with another dongle you could try? You should also check if the contacts for the OBD dongle have proper contact, i also heard from people that the contact wasn't really good and once they fixed it it worked more stable.

Please pair the dongle in the obdlink app first, update to latest firmware and then try to connect in ABRP after making sure obdlink app is not connected anymore.

G

Galen Gisler

I did as you suggested — pair the obdlink app with the dongle first, check for firmware updates (none found, see screenshot), disconnected the obdlink app, then tried to pair with ABRP, getting the same result — failure on Step 3.

Any other suggestions?

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

This is the only way we know of so far. Please try it again and make sure the car is powered on. Also make sure no other app tries to use the obdlink dongle.

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Hi,

just checked your logs, and it seems the car does not respond to the commands we send.

The Obdlink CX needs to be linked via Obdlink app first, before it can be used in ABRP. Could you please remove it, unlink it from your phone, then follow the setup procedure of Obdlink app to link the dongle and once it is done, disconnect and try it again in ABRP.

Make sure the car is on as well, when you try to connect.

Please make sure the obdlink is on latest fmw and no other apps uses it at the same time. Sometimes the obdlink app already connects to the dongle and then we can't use it at the same time. In some cases it might also require 1-2 tries.

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Hi, please make sure the obdlink is on latest firmware. When you try to connect to abrp after that make sure no other app is connected. Also the obdlink app should not be connected.

Avatar

Cory Hendrickson

I made sure the firmware is up to date and that no other apps are connected. In the live data section at the bottom of the 'checking for connection' page, it says 'connected' with a green Bluetooth symbol but the error message about the failure pops up each time.

Avatar

Just checked the log again and it is connected, but still does not get data from the car. Not sure why this is the case, it's the same command for older and newer Bolts and also a very generic one for vehicle speed. Did you get it to work in the meantime or are you still struggling with the connection? Do you by chance have another dongle you can try, just to make sure the car really does not respond?

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

We will check if we can reproduce this, however our only developer with that OBD dongle has a working connection. Still we will check if we can find out anything. Might take a bit though, so if it is urgent for you, maybe you should try a different dongle (or 3rd party app if those work).

Thanks, I really appreciate you taking a look into this, I troubleshoot voip systems for a living so I definitely know how tracking these sorts of thing down can be. What are the specs of phone iOS version and OBDLink cx firmware that team member is using? Maybe there’s an answer in those differences.

S

Shawn King

Samuel, Phillip, Derek,
I was finally able to get this working tonight, the process is a bit counter intuitive, heres what I did. open the obdlink app press connect, as the status comes up for connecting leave that open, open abrp click the abrp icon in the top right hand corner then the drop down arrow to the right of car model, then the gear icon to the right of your car model then scroll down and click on ABRP OBD connection, then choose your obd bluetooth connection, you'll see it show a registering status below if you did this fast enough, but then it hangs on register, to fix that close the obdlink app, then go back to abrp the registering status should update to connected within a few seconds. I know connect automatically each time after following these steps once. hope this helps.

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Thanks for your investigation. As far as I remember, the Obdlink goes into non-pairing mode after one minute. Maybe that is also related. Once it is paired it should even pair after that, but for initial pairing it needs to be within a very short time frame. Maybe that also helps in getting it to work.

D

Derek

Can confirm that this works - if you start the connection in the odblink app, switch over to abrp, and start the setup, it recognizes it instantly. Unfortunately, this isnt an issue only at setup - I need to connect using the odblink app every time I want to use it with abrp

Hello ABRP team, I'd like to give you some feedback ...

App version: 4.1.16
Platform: web
User ID: 447290
eventlog_uuid: 22c1f58f-6e46-48e7-8b4f-1b1a4377f3e6

Hi im trying to get live data working between the ABRP App on an Iphone 12 pro IOS 15.3.1 and the obdlink cx firmware version 5.6.22

Unfortunately each time I try to connect to the car I get the following error on the ABRP OBD Connection screen (car connection status shows an x when trying to connect to bluetooth and a bug report is sent), please let me know what I might be missing, were about to take a 14 hour trip and id really like to use ABRP.

Avatar

Milton Ketch

Did you ever get your’s working? I’ve tried all the different ways that people on here have said and no luck.

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Just asked my colleague that also has an Obdlink CX. He said he paired it first via the OBDLink app and then connected ABRP to it. Maybe try that as well. No other possible workaround available right now. Please try it again. If possible maybe also try another phone for comparison.

D

Derek

Having the same issue - multiple tries still yield no success
- Oneplus 7T with Android 11 (December 2021 patch)
- OBDLink CX with firmware 5.6.22
- 2018 Chevy bolt EV (2/2 recall patches, no battery swap)

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Ok this is a bit weird, in the log data i can see, that all the data has been received but then runs into a timeout. Please just try it again, maybe even one or two times right after another. We will check in the meantime, if there is anything wrong on our end that could cause the timeout. But it should definitely work if you try it again a few times. This should only affect the setup and not the actual usage while driving.

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Just one additional question. The OBDLink CX requires latest firmware to work with ABRP, did you update the firmware already in OBDLink app?

P

Philip Davis

I checked the firmware in the OBDLink app and it showed no updates for the OBDLink CX ( firmware version 5.6.22).
I will try to connect again this evening.

P

Philip Davis

Hi Samuel.
- Car was on
- Closed all other apps before trying to connect with ABRP
I got the error: BLE connection established, failed to connect to your car.
Please see the attached screenshots. I believe I reported the bug at least once or twice on the first day I tried to used the dongle, but there wasn't any feedback in the app so I wasn't sure if it went through. I can report again if needed.
Is there any other information you need from me? Or anything else I should try?

Avatar

Samuel_ABRP

Please make sure the car is on, also make sure no other app accesses the OBD dongle, as it only supports one connection. So close all the other apps and make sure the OBD dongle is not used by one of the apps (maybe replug also to make sure the connection is lost). If it fails send in the error report and let us know. Might also require 2-3 tries until it works.

I can confirm I am having the same exact issue with a chevy bolt 2021 premier, paired to the obdlink software first, please assist, ive reported the bug as well under my username [mail removed] maybe something changed in IOS? im using IOS 15.3.1

S

I think this may be due to the several IOS updates that have rolled out since December because I can reproduce the connection issue in ev notify as well, just bought this adapter and premium to take a trip on March 3rd hope it can be sorted soon, thanks!

Update: I tried with android Samsung galaxy s9+ and recreated the issue so this does not seem iPhone specific.
