ABRP should work in Android Auto without having to open the App on your device.

Currently, when I start ABRP in my vehicle's Android Auto, all I get is a canvas. It only becomes functional once I manually start the app on my phone.
Other apps do work regardless of running or not on my phone, examples being Google Maps or Spotify.

Hi Stephan,
this is a problem we are aware of for certain device and OS combinations. As a workaround you could go to app settings (long click ABRP icon), then scroll down to advanced settings, and enable the toggle button "Display over other apps", that should make it work again. Then you don't have to start the app before connecting anymore.

Happy to provide all the information you need. After all, I am a retired BA and Software QA Engineer ;-).
So here we go:
- the screenshots you asked for are attached
- the ABRP version is: 4.7.2
- Android Auto Version: 10.9.634644-release
- my device: Pixel 3a, running Android 12 (cannot upgrade any further)
- my car: Cupra Born (software versions shown in one of the screen shots), wired connection to my device
To recreate the issue:
- on your device, make sure that ABRP is NOT running
- connect to the vehicle (wired connection)
- on the vehicle's screen, start Android Auto.
- using the vehicle's display, start ABRP -> note that the screen is blank (see screenshots)
- on your device, start ABRP -> only then does the system become fully functional.
- I repeated the above steps with changing Battery Usage setting from 'optimised' to 'unrestricted'. This made no difference.
